In 2008 I was an artist on their horse art mural, "Le Cadeau du Cheval/The Horse Gift". It was a fun project and I was able to attend the US unveiling in Columbus, Ohio. It was a massive project and incredible to see in person towering 25 feet high.<br />
The current mural project is centered around the dog. Who doesn't love dogs. I chose to paint a Samoyed puppy using reference photos from puppy photos of our late male Samoyed, Inipi's Song of Raku, known as Racki. He was the best Sammy we have had the pleasure of sharing our lives with. We have had a number of Samoyeds over the past 45 years, pretty much addicted to the playful, loving, beautiful dogs.<br />
I finished painting panel #106 for the mural this week. I titled it " Teaching the Sammy His Song". For anyone who knows Sammys, you have heard them sing. It's kind of a howl but it usually ends with an Oh Ya. They are very vocal dogs. Racki did have his song but he only rarely shared it with us. I added three wrens with only 2 singing in a reference to Racki's reluctance to sing his song. Best tools for the job. Purchase a needle nosed pliers, you will not regret it. I used Stens Starter Pull Cord #4 1/8 inch on a 100 foot roll at Amazon.com for around $12.00. You need a strong cord that will not stretch. You will need to burn the end of the cord to melt it so it will not fray. You also will need a heddle, I used a flat Kessenich loom heddle. I made the holes on the heddle larger so the cord will fit through easily. You will need masking tape. </div>

Recently I decided to redo the internal cords/ropes. I had an extremely difficult time finding information on the web regarding this process. I have owned this loom, a 1950's cherry Kessenich 36" since 1978. It worked beautifully until 10 years ago when the ropes started to break. I redid the ropes at the time but since have notices my shafts are no longer level and the ropes appear to be stretched out and soft. At the time I used what Kessenich Looms sent out as a how to. There was no other information out there at the time. My loom did work after the first rethreading of the ropes. I will use the term cord and rope interchangeably for the same item. This time around I did find one other site that had useful information regarding the replacing of the ropes. KBknits and Crafts. This blog was very helpful and I am grateful this person decided to post her process and what materials to use for replacement. I also contacted Bruce Niemi of Kessenich Looms in Allgeran, MI for further information. Bruce was very helpful and I also am very grateful for his time on the phone with me.<br />
I put together 5 pages of information on how to approach this process. I will post the links here. They are jpeg files and should be easily downloaded. I also will post pics following the process. Good luck. It is a difficult, time consuming process. It took me over 40 hours and a great deal of frustration. But in the end, well worth it.<br />
<i style="background-color: #c27ba0;"><b>Important tip:</b> </i>When adjusting the knots at the bottom of the lamms(below) and the shaft sticks(above), do not pull on the cording. Pulling the cording down so you can access the knot more<br />
easily will cause major chaos with the cord wound around the pipes. It will cause more wraps on the pipe and you will need to redo the wrapping of the cords.<br />

This will be year 7 for me. I am honored. Here's a bit about the show. This juried exhibit remains one of the most popular and well-attended in its’ 32 year history at New Visions Gallery. Each year, we celebrate art which has in some way drawn inspiration from agriculture – modern or historical. It opens dialogues aboutagriculture, how it has impacted our society, and how it will continue to shape us in the future. This is anespecially meaningful theme because of the gallery’s location in the heart of Wisconsin’s Dairyland;Marshfield Clinic is also the home to the National Farm Medicine Center.<br />

Now that the winning poster for the Wisconsin State Fair has been revealed, I am taking the opportunity to post my entry in the poster competition. I was one of 4 finalists. Rozan Henning won the competition with her design. The theme this year was "Animals at the Fair". I had a great deal of fun designing the poster. I was thinking of a child's view of the animals. My personal theme was the animals coming to the fair. The chickens on the road and the pig sitting below the Wisconsin State Fair entry way. Flying pigs and marching horses and cows. It was a lot of fun.Leslie Lyne Zantowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882302802993461298noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7820753422992840662.post-16264724083257146172016-04-22T10:56:00.001-05:002016-04-22T17:03:17.131-05:00New painting, "Windhorses" oil on board, 18"by24"<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPvooqJy0TqMlifsC2tffz0VoNGphuPPhHnhhs4_UmrkTwX8PSsCgqH1t66TsTAnQcVPHlVdzQz6hQYuuw6IZri6871kwa4hmi-GgXcmO_k_pjKYd7mQ5DZdVW7X5LF4g0ntyL_0rKcSKz/s1600/windhorses500.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPvooqJy0TqMlifsC2tffz0VoNGphuPPhHnhhs4_UmrkTwX8PSsCgqH1t66TsTAnQcVPHlVdzQz6hQYuuw6IZri6871kwa4hmi-GgXcmO_k_pjKYd7mQ5DZdVW7X5LF4g0ntyL_0rKcSKz/s400/windhorses500.jpg" /></a>Leslie Lyne Zantowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882302802993461298noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7820753422992840662.post-59497289531975207872016-03-23T01:43:00.000-05:002016-03-23T09:08:08.188-05:00Two new works. "Calling the Oneota Home" Oil on Board. 18" by 24". There is a strong story that goes with this image. The land I lived on for 27 years was full of Native Spirit. A thousand years before the Oneota lived on this land. Its a personal story as I honor their life on that land so many years before. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr1KnSoDRPc6farX85PLiHL7NmS9MIEgRqzvDzWHbmgCTEs5lZCsvtufZvvlNpOCPxKGxrvjZtigKpddVmlUeM6TpwLc6ecuwk5cosH2_wVAhr_qdIJaC__qX7OLaApbGGJ9WF4v9hQKrI/s1600/oneotaforcard1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr1KnSoDRPc6farX85PLiHL7NmS9MIEgRqzvDzWHbmgCTEs5lZCsvtufZvvlNpOCPxKGxrvjZtigKpddVmlUeM6TpwLc6ecuwk5cosH2_wVAhr_qdIJaC__qX7OLaApbGGJ9WF4v9hQKrI/s320/oneotaforcard1+copy.jpg" /></a></div>

Last fall 2 of my graphite works were juried into this show and sold on opening night "Salute" and "Turning the Wheel" both 9" by 12" graphite on Strathmore Rag Paper. Images below. I needed to reformat my computer yesterday and in process do not have easy access to my images. Tomorrow is another day and I can put them up assp. Currently fighting with Facebook. I've been locked out for days. Crazy computer angst. I wasn't even hacked, just reformatted and lost my sign in info. On the pretty good news front, I am one of 4 finalists for the Wisconsin State Fairtastic Poster Competition. A good deal of time has been spent working on my design and presenting drafts. Today was the final jury and I was told it was a tight jury between my piece and the winning artist's piece. Darn........ So close... My piece will be on display at the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds the first 2 weeks in August. It was a fun project, though taxing. I made it very detailed and went though a lot of brushes. Not sure if I can post the image yet, so I won't. Also last summer I was again juried into the New Visions Gallery, Culture and Agriculture exhibit in Marshfield Wi. That's 6 in a row. I'm hoping to get another piece done for this year's upcoming exhibit

I've spent most of my life, since 27 yrs hoping to stay cancer free. 2 types of cancer, one much worse than the other or maybe not. Its something that is just always there, a tiny shadow stuffed deeply behind days filled with wringing out every ounce of grace and joy. When you are a caregiver of someone else you don't find much time to think such things. I'm a grateful caregiver, it keeps me moving forward and not thinking about myself. So grateful we are both still here and able to go on loving each other. Grateful of being a grandma and cuddling small bodies and filling their heads with silly stories, teaching them to swim, pushing bodies down into the pool so they can touch the bottom with their hands, (at their request), and fast as light pulling them back up by their pants to grab another breath of air for their tiny lungs to fill, only for another request to dive back down again and again. Does it get better than that? Little faces behind big green bug eyed goggles. Grandchildren, aged 3 walking past your paintings and making comments, "Grandma, I haven't seen these before." and " Grandma, I don't like the yellow birds, I don't like their cheeks.", and "Grandma, I'm a Painter, I can't go pick up the walnuts in the yard, its not my job.". All my grandchildren, so incredibly bright and gifted and sweet. Themselves budding artists and musicians finding their wings in their own worlds. So very proud of my 2 sons who have grown into incredibly talented, responsible, loving men. Grateful to have had that old farmhouse for so many decades to fix up, clear fields, dig fence posts, raise critters, build the sweat lodge and bring ceremony back to that aching land. Cancer free..seems a bit hollow today when I hear of the passing of another incredibly talented artist, Shary B. Akers. I met her briefly over the phone years ago when I curated an equine art show. I remember well the conversations and could hear such grace in her voice. We are losing too many, too soon. Blessings today to everyone who has had to struggle with this terrifying disease or have had to even think about it, fear it, carry it with them. Blessings to the young woman, Kjersten Snell, I got my Racki dog from 9 years ago, who was struggling with esophageal cancer and lost her battle so young and fought so hard. I pray for a future without this monster. Until then I'll keep moving forward, trying to squeeze every ounce out of a very blessed and juicy life. Namaste.Leslie Lyne Zantowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882302802993461298noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7820753422992840662.post-53326998414536888752013-07-15T15:19:00.000-05:002014-01-20T07:52:41.135-06:00New Graphite DrawingsTurning the Wheel and Salute were both juried into the 2013 "Equine Jubilee" at The Arts Castle in Delaware, Ohio.

On a farm in Trempealeau County I found this lovely red chestnut Clydesdale mare. At the time I had never seen a chestnut Clyde before. She glowed in the sun. I noticed the tips of her ears were rough and torn looking. Maybe frostbite? I have never seen that in a horse before.

When my cousin and I were in our teens we rode horses from sunrise to sunset over gravel country roads and through hay and corn fields. This painting didn't start out with this memory in mind. But yesterday as I was scanning it I remembered those hot summer days. We had a horse named Beauty, a big bay mare with a heart of gold. We road her double and bareback, usually me in front and her behind with her hands around my waist. When the corn was about knee high, we would take Beauty into the corn field and gallop up and down the rows. We were pretty good about not knocking down the corn and stayed between the rows. The field was hilly and there were a few times I didn't warn my cousin that I was about to give Beauty my heels and urge her into a gallop. She never fell off, we were both glued to the back of the big bay mare, having the time of our lives. The corn rows and the long leaves of the corn in this painting brought that back to me. Pretty close to flying.

I rescued a small white part Arabian mare a number of years ago. I had been told she was found in a kill pen in Iowa. Blood running down her face and all over her white chest. She was taken to a wonderful farm and very well taken care of, except the other horses shunned her or picked on her. The gal felt sorry for her, she had a loneliness about her. "Pearl" the mare was given to me as a giveaway gift at a spiritual workshop. We brought her home and it took months to gain her trust. She easily befriended our sheep and a few goats. She became a nanny to the young ones. So gentle, she would lift her hoof on its tip, before she would move it close to the lambs or kids. As if she knew she could break their fragile legs if she wasn't careful. She was a beautiful soul with white forelock and mane glistening in the light. She foundered repeatedly and after a long struggle of keeping her going, she died. The next morning I went out to feed the sheep and there she stood, like always, a pure white statue standing in front of her barn in the paddock, waiting for me to take care of her. But I had to shake my head, because I remembered she really wasn't with us anymore. What a gift that mare gave me. The mare in the painting comes from my Pearl.

Finished it last fall but it was "accidentally" carried off by a small grandson and needed some repair. I repainted quite a bit of it and am happier with it now.Leslie Lyne Zantowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882302802993461298noreply@blogger.com0
